Giving a speech reviewing the 15 years of formation and development, Dr. Ha Thuc Vien - VGU Vice President emphasized that VGU was established in 2008, with the orientation of becoming a research university according to the Vietnamese Government's Excellent University Project, aiming to become a leading research university in Viet Nam and the region. VGU applies German academic models and standards, and training programs are developed with partner universities to ensure excellence in teaching and research. Currently, VGU's partner universities in Germany include 40 universities, of which TU9 (a consortium of 9 leading technical universities in Germany) is VGU's academic backbone. The university has a total of 2,733 students, with the proportion of annual exchange students coming from German partner universities more than 12%.
In 2021, the University built a new facility with a scale of 50 hectares with a total investment of 200 million USD, with 14 computer laboratories and 71 technical laboratories. The University's scientific research activities always receive attention. Enterprise connection is also promoted by the University through many diverse forms of cooperation such as organizing seminars, cooperating in developing ideas and implementing research, and co-supervising undergraduate and graduate theses, factory visits, career guidance, internships, etc. The university is expected to have a training scale of 6,000 students by 2030.
