Tan Uyen city was established on the basis of the status quo of Tan Uyen town. After its establishment, Tan Uyen city covers an area of more than 191,700 km2, with a population of 466,053 people, including 10 wards and 02 communes. The administrative boundary to the East is bordered by Dong Nai province, to the west by Thu Dau Mot city and Ben Cat town, to the south by Thuan An city and Di An city, to the north by Bac Tan Uyen district.

Binh Duong Provincial Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Van Loi said that the project of upgrading Tan Uyen to a city has been prepared by the province for many years. Since upgrading a town in 2013, Tan Uyen has developed rapidly and positively, with an average growth rate of 13%/year. The structure of economy, industry, construction and services accounts for 90%, budget revenue is about 4,000 billion VND. In addition, Tan Uyen town has no longer poor people according to the criteria of the Central Government, the rate of non-agricultural workers is more than 95%. The town has Nam Tan Uyen, Vietnam - Singapore II-A, III industrial parks; 3 industrial clusters and 1,500 enterprises are in operation.
