Vietnam reaches the target 10 years ahead of Millennium Development Goals on poverty reduction

​PORTAL - On the morning of January 11, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (LI&SA) held an online Conference to summarize the work of labor, people with meritorious services and society in 2020, period of 2016-2020; to deploy the tasks in 2021. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam attended and chaired the conference.

At Binh Duong bridge point, attending the meeting were Mr. Nguyen Loc Ha - Member of Provincial Standing Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, and representatives of departments, committees and branches.

In the period of 2016-2020, the Ministry of LI&SA, committees, branches and localities have implemented breakthrough solutions to develop vocational education, the quality of human resources has been significantly improved in accordance with market demand. The rate of trained employees increased from 51.6% in 2015 to 64.5% in 2020.

Over the past five years, the country has created new jobs for more than 8 million employees; the general unemployment rate is 2.48%, in urban areas is below 4%; Vietnam is one of the 10 countries with the lowest unemployment rate in the world.

Policies and regimes towards people with meritorious services to the revolution were fully implemented, solving backlog in recognition and certification of people with meritorious services towards the direction of expansion. Up to now, 99.7% of households with meritorious services have a living standard equal to or higher than the average living standard of people at the residence; there are no more poor people with meritorious services. The rate of poor households according to the multidimensional poverty level declined rapidly, from 9.88% in 2015 to 2.75% by the end of 2020, reaching the target 10 years ahead of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Particularly in 2020, with the great impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and unusual natural disasters, storms and floods, many countries in the region and the world fall into recession, Vietnam is proud to have achieved "dual goals" in preventing, controlling the pandemic while maintaining economic growth.

In 2021, the Ministry of LI&SA identifies a number of specific tasks, of which to focus on developing a flexible and adaptive labor market in order to effectively mobilize and use human resources for socio-economic development in the "post-Covid" period. Improving the quality of vocational education, focusing on training high-quality human resources associated with labor restructuring. Focusing on building harmonious, stable and progressive labor relations, especially a number of new issues such as salary policy, prolonging the retirement age, developing labor relations, and forming representative organizations representing employees at enterprises as prescribed in the Labor Code effective from January 01, 2021. Implementing synchronously and effectively policies on social security and social welfare; continuing to improve and enhance the lives of people with meritorious services, especially after the revised Ordinance on Preferential Treatment for People with Meritorious Services takes effect; caring and supporting the poor and vulnerable subjects in society, contributing to the realization of the goal of rapid and sustainable development. Protecting and resolutely handling acts of mistreatment and abuse of children and women, etc.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam acknowledged and praised the results and achievements achieved by the LI &SA branch in 2020, including poverty reduction activities, implementation of policies for people with meritorious services, social security, employment and vocational training in the complicated situation of Covid-19 pandemic, etc.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested that, in 2021, the whole branch concentrates on creating a comprehensive and fundamental innovation step, focusing on the following areas: Developing a multi-layered, diversified and unified social security system, mobilizing the whole society's cooperation; improving the quality of vocational education, contributing to the training and fostering of human resources, especially high-quality human resources associated with the technology revolution 4.0. In the immediate future, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested agencies and localities focus on taking good care of Tet for the social protection beneficiaries, the poor, and people with meritorious services to the revolution.
